Evolution Korea
Up until recently the Korean scientific community was hesitant about working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credibility. However, silence is no anymore an option.
The STR has been fighting to remove evolution-related content from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. This is only one aspect of the development paradigm's evolution.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the changes in genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adjust to their environment, which can lead to variations in genes or even whole genomes. Over the course of many generations, these changes can result in the emergence of new species. Natural selection is the predominant theory of evolution. It explains how people with advantageous traits can reproduce faster and longer than those with disadvantageous ones. This differential reproduction can eventually lead to the emergence and evolution of new species.
The word "evolution", which comes from the Latin for revealing or unrolling has been used in many different ways as the concept has evolved, both in science and in other fields. Some early evolutionists, including Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that the existing species evolved into new species in a planned manner. The term"transmutation" was coined by Lamarck's disciple embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, to describe this notion. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the idea of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.
In recent years evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living organisms develop traits that increase their chances of survival, or their ability to reproduce offspring. Over time, genetic variability can cause a population to develop new physical traits or biological functions. Natural selection is the process that drives the majority of evolutionary changes. However, non-genetic changes such as the growth in muscle mass from diet or exercise cannot be considered examples of evolution since they are not inherited by future generations.
Creationists have a tendency to use the argument that evolution is controversial despite the fact that it has been proven true by thousands of scientific tests and that it has stood the test of time. They claim that the concept should not be taught at school. In South Korea, creationists have gained a few victories in their efforts to eliminate evolution from high-school textbooks which includes the removal of any mention of the evolutionary history of humans, as well as the Archaeopteryx feathered dinosaur thought to be an ancestral bird's ancestor.
Why is Evolution Important?
Evolution explains how Earth and all its living species evolved. 에볼루션 룰렛 is one of the fundamentals of biology, and aids scientists discover how living things operate and grow. Evolution also shows how different species are connected. Scientists study evolution to gain a better understanding of the natural world, and to make useful discoveries like the development of new drugs.
The evidence for evolution of biological species is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that can explain so much about the universe as well as life on Earth and has been rigorously tested and verified over the course of many years. Many people, including religious leaders, are in favor of the theory of evolution as a scientific fact. It is important to understand that evolutionary biology doesn't conflict with religious beliefs, as the theory is based on objects, events and processes within the physical world.
Many religious people have found a way to reconcile evolution with their beliefs. For example certain Christians believe that God created the universe through evolution and that humans have an ancestral connection with other animals.
It is essential that science educators stand up for the teaching evolution. In certain countries, anti-evolution sentiment is growing. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit teaching evolution. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research, is campaigning for the removal of textbook content on the evolution of horses as well as the avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.
It is crucial to keep in mind that the evidence in favor of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a diverse variety of sources, including fossils, genetic studies, and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently confirm the evidence.
The majority of scientists believe in the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this belief are diverse. Certain scientists study evolution in order to make practical discoveries, such as developing new drugs or enhancing existing ones. Others do this to improve animal and plants species, mostly to benefit humans. Some are simply curious, while others have a deep faith in God and seek to understand how the universe works.
What is Creationism?
Creationists believe that God created all things in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken literally. Although not all creationists are Christian, many are. Creationists are usually divided into two categories: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.
The most well-known kind of creationist is called the YEC. They believe that God created the universe exactly in the way described in the Bible. YECs believe that the biblical account of the creation's six days is true, and that the universe and the life on Earth began only recently.
OECs are not as well-known however they're just as enthusiastic about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and Earth are billions-of-years old and believe that evolution is a lie.
Both forms of creationism deny that scientific principles such as natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origins of life on Earth. They argue that evolution is not possible because it would require a miracle, and that the scientists who founded modern science rejected miracles out of fear of losing credibility.
Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution and special creation, and call their view “theistic evolution." This is also referred to as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of created kinds." In this theory, God creates the original species and then allows them to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species that are similar to the original.
Other creationists hold that God created the universe and all living things in a single event, called the Great Flood. Creationists believe that all species were created at the same time and then slowly evolved. They also reject the concept of abiogenesis and argue that the emergence of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is impossible.
In general, creationists are against teaching evolution in schools. This position is supported by a variety of professional organizations, including the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education, the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, some scientists and educational institutions are more flexible, and allow the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curriculum.
What is Creationism?
When people think of creationism, many of them think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolutionist movement. The publishers of high-school textbooks announced last week that they will remove references to evolution in their editions. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this drive. STR has won its first victory in eliminating examples of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor called the Archeopteryx, from textbooks. It is now focusing on the removal of excerpts from Darwin's infamous finch research and on human evolution too.
STR claims to have the support of 4000 families and individuals. Its goal, it says is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which paints a negative view for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists in the United States. A survey of students in biology found that half didn't believe in evolution. The causes are not certain, but could be related to religion or the absence of creation scientists in the US.
The KACR achieved many things through its lectures and seminars in the past. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them was an educational textbook on natural sciences with a cosmological perspective. This sparked an interest in the college community. In 1991 the year 1991, a minister and professor started teaching Creation Science in one university, and it continues to be taught until today.
On August 7 and 8 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six foreign lecturers including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin presented to an audience of several thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given lectures on creation science in prestigious seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
